Knowing your Bouvier!

Bouviers are characteristicly ...calm, rational and bold.  The breed has a working heritage and thrives on a close personal relationship. Bouviers can be stubborn in attempting to get their own way, training at a young age with respect for the character and natural abilities will be well worth the time and effort, for the enjoyable companionship they would provide.  The Bouvier des Flandres is not, nor should it be, a dog for every family.  As with other strongly protective herding breeds, they should be in a home where they would be taken seriously.  This is a breed that requires extra commitment, a willingness to work with and train the dog; while the owner should have the assertiveness and confidence neccessary to gain and maintain the Bouviers respect.  They are well suited to the needs and desires of many; always ready to work or play, while providing loving companionship, they seek approval and affection.

Bouviers a versatile loving breed!

Bouvier des Flandres are a versatile breed of dogs, capable of fitting into virtually any lifestyle.  They are very strong of body and mind, carefully weighing situations before reacting.  This breed is utilized in police work, therapy work, farm work. They use natural herding instincts in various situations; I have even had my first Bouvier save a child from being struck by a speeding car. When asked how I trained her, I explained I could not take credit for what she did out of natural abilities and instinct.  These gentle creatures provide loving companionship when provided with human connection and socialization. They require guidance and training to fully appreciation their capable personalities.  Bouviers like to keep their human companions within sight and are commonly found to follow you from room to room, watching you, laying at your feet or in your lap! Large in stature but with a graceful nature; making for a wonderful in-home family member.
